APPARATUS FOR CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF THE FETAL HEART RATE.* By Edward H. Hon, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University School of Medicine. During the past four years continuous monitoring of fetal heart rate during labor and delivery has permitted the accumulation of accurate, permanent records which may be of value for the assessment of fetal heart rate as an index of fetal environment. The QRS complex of the fetal ECG has been used as a trigger source for a cardiotachometer and oscillograph system.`3 The major difficulty has been the elimination of the maternal ECG from the combined maternal and fetal ECG tracing. Various separation methods have been used with some success; the most promising is the attachment of a small electrode to the fetal scalp or buttocks. This method has been used for over a year and

A PCA/ICA based Fetal ECG Extraction from Mother Abdominal Recordings by Means of a Novel Data-driven Approach to Fetal ECG Quality Assessment
Background: Fetal electrocardiography is a developing field that provides valuable information on the fetal health during pregnancy. By early diagnosis and treatment of fetal heart problems, more survival chance is given to the infant. Objective: Here, we extract fetal ECG from maternal abdominal recordings and detect R-peaks in order to recognize fetal heart rate. On the next step, we find a be...
متن کاملA System for Continuous Estimating and Monitoring Cardiac Output via Arterial Waveform Analysis
Background: Cardiac output (CO) is the total volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute and is a function of heart rate and stroke volume. CO is one of the most important parameters for monitoring cardiac function, estimating global oxygen delivery and understanding the causes of high blood pressure. Hence, measuring CO has always been a matter of interest to researchers and clinicians. Sev...
متن کاملA study of an intelligent system to support decision making in the management of labour using the cardiotocograph – the INFANT study protocol
BACKGROUND Continuous electronic fetal heart rate monitoring in labour is widely used but its potential for improving fetal and neonatal outcomes has not been realised. The most likely reason is the difficulty of interpreting the fetal heart rate trace correctly during labour. Computerised interpretation of the fetal heart rate and intelligent decision-support has the potential to deliver this ...
متن کاملUse of Continuous Electronic Fetal Monitoring in a Preterm Fetus: Clinical Dilemmas and Recommendations for Practice
The aim of intrapartum continuous electronic fetal monitoring using a cardiotocograph (CTG) is to identify a fetus exposed to intrapartum hypoxic insults so that timely and appropriate action could be instituted to improve perinatal outcome. Features observed on a CTG trace reflect the functioning of somatic and autonomic nervous systems and the fetal response to hypoxic or mechanical insults d...

Background: The presence of increased numbers of nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) in the umbilical cord blood has been associated with states of relative hypoxia. Nucleated red blood cell counts are a potentially useful tool in estimating the degree and timing of intrauterine hypoxia. This may have important implication in determining causality in case of compromised infant. Cord blood NRBC coun...
